What is GDPR

On May 25, 2018, the EU's new data protection regulation, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), will be introduced, which entails stricter requirements for handling personal data. The GDPR replaces the Swedish Personal Data Act (PUL) and affects all companies that collect, process, store and disseminate data that can be linked in one way or another to an individual, both structured and unstructured data (e.g. e-mail).

The difference between PUL and GDPR can be briefly described as that companies no longer have the right to own personal data but now only borrow it and that companies must demonstrate what they use the personal data for.

The Data Protection Regulation only applies to natural persons, not legal entities, where data processing takes place within the EU. However, legal persons outside the EU who conduct business within the EU are also affected by the new regulation.
